During the first class that I have attended, we started listening the Bach Prelude in C Major, the reason was that we have to write, only listening, the chords of first 11 bars, and the we talked about the modulations and special things that happen there. During the next lesson we did the same, while Patrick was playing the Prelude in C Major, we had to write the chords, and finally, we did it. The reason to write that was that we had to create our own melody based on that chords.
To create the melody we talked about different ways to do it, for example the use of non chord tones like passing notes, neighbors tones, suspension or anticipation, easy tricks that helped us to create easily our melody.
Then, at home with all the chords, the critical points of the Prelude, like modulations, cadences, we had to create a melody for my instrument, in my case the saxophone. I have never created a melody before this, and for me it was a good experience, sometimes a bit difficult because not always the notes fit correctly in the chords, but making some changes it was good.
The next step was to modify our melody and adapt it to different instruments that we have in class, like trombone, double bass, piano and saxophone. The process was very interesting, I had to know a bit about each instrument, what they could or could not do, the register…
